Some love it because it offers a peaceful, beautiful place to remember their loved ones while others enjoy the convenience of escaping the hustle and bustle of every day life in a place that is welcoming and serene. There are many other people who have fond memories of Cedar Hill Cemetery from their youth. Some would come with their families on a sunny Sunday afternoon to picnic on the grounds while others remember fishing in Lyn Mawr or sledding down vacant, snow-covered hills. And still others love to come to Cedar Hill to birdwatch, study the trees, paint the surroundings, bike the winding roads, walk the rolling hills, and meditate in a private corner. I love Cedar Hill Cemetery for its beauty and wildlife. There is nothing like walking down the main drive, passing by Lyn Mawr, and watching the ducks, the turtles, the deer and the blue hering. After a long day of work, I am always thankful for the serenity this stroll brings to me and my life.
Is there a more beautiful, peaceful setting in the City of Hartford? I think not! I love it first thing in the morning. Very calming.
Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford is one of the most beautiful, scenic and serene cemeteries I have ever experienced in my life. Curiousity first pulled me throught its beautiful gates, and continued curiousity inspired me further down the main entrance road.
The very first monument I stopped to explore was the stunning stone and embedded bronze sculpture honoring the memory of Horace Wells, the discoverer of anaesthesia. A gorgeous angel with wonderous wings appearing over a sleeping figure with the inscribed sentiment THERE SHALL BE NO PAIN actually provoked a deep emotional connection. Who knew someone so famous and so pivotal in the world of medicine could be buried in Cedar Hill, let alone Hartford! Walking amidst the well-manicured, yet humbling, landscape, filled with every manner of sculpture, prose, flora, and yes, fauna, I felt I was in a magical place. Returning time and time again, especially in the spring and fall, I was amazed to see the energetic evolving foliage, especially in mid-autumn. Most every color in the visible spectrum is represented in every leaf, every bush, and every shrub.
That first experience occurred in 1986...and some 20 years later, I return to Cedar Hill Cemetery on a regular basis, to see what I missed in the past.
If you truly want to know how a society expresses itself and values its culture, you need to see how that very same society cares for its dead.
In Cedar Hill, you will find all manner of visual delight and sculptural grandeur, reflecting the energy and sophistication which, to this day, is greater Hartford, Connecticut.
